INSIDE STORIES BEHIND AREA REAL ESTATE DEALS
Tea for 200
July 28 was the date of the 10th anniversary of Tea for 200, the AIDS benefit hosted by Litchfield County power broker Gael Hammer, of Klemm Real Estate. Unusual in broker parlance, the name given to the benefit actually understates its attributes: Last year more than 700 guests attended the swank garden party, an event that netted millions. At press time, Hammer projected that proceeds this year would top $500,000 to benefit the Northwestern Connecticut AIDS Project, as well as the Susan B. Anthony Foundation. Hammer keeps busy selling real estate, too: July saw the closing of the Litchfield County home of Hollywood producer Scott Rudin, which sold for $4.15 million. With Maria Taylor, also of Klemm, Hammer currently has a $2.38 million co-listing for the weekend home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Krasnow, former chairman and CEO of Elektra Entertainment.
Real Estate Lite: The Beach Read
We know you're trying to read this with toes dug in the sand and your chaise lounge reclined to flat. And while real estate is on your mind, you don't have the bandwidth to bone up on REITs or the sub-prime mortgage mess. So we'll keep it light this month with some eye-candy cottages and bodacious beach manses on shore points, starting up north in Winter Harbor, Maine, and working our way home to Belle Haven in Greenwich. See you in September!
The Maine Coast
Maine is the Texas of the East Coast—mythic and over-sized, at least compared to the tidy and thickly settled shoreline to its south.
