THE RENOVATED INTERIOR of a traditional Greenwich home is a study in contrasts carefully curated by Claire Maestroni and her colleagues at Mis en Scene. The first floor, formerly six rooms, now lives on as an open, airy space where the living room, dining room, kitchen and family room flow into each other through reclaimed French oak plank flooring of the team's design. To accentuate the new layout, Maestroni designed a wall of glass windows that runs the entire length of the first floor, a touch that draws the eye outward and onto the lush backyard.

Against the flooring and other weathered details, such as the antique armoire doors that slide to partition the rooms, Maestroni introduced modern elements: IKEA cabinetry, a Sub-Zero fridge and Miele appliances in the contemporary kitchen; a "green" Ecosmart fireplace in the family room, along with abstract bronze sculptures; and an original wooden staircase retrofitted with metal and a leather-upholstered guard rail.

Wall treatments throughout the home add more surprise. The children's suite, formerly the attic, is bedecked with clapboard; grey flannel covers the walls of the master bedroom; gleaming white Corian covers those in the master bath. Yet perhaps the most delightful surprise of all is a private breakfast niche that's concealed behind a closet door in the master bedroom.
