IN LARCHMONT, NY, AN OLD VICTORIAN ONE BLOCK FROM THE WATER IS FILLED WITH MID-CENTURY FURNITURE, MODERN ART AND CHINESE ANTIQUES |
WHEN A FAMILY with four young children moved to Larchmont, NY, after spending a good deal of time abroad in London and Tokyo, they found a beautiful old Victorian perched one block from the water. They honed their vision with the help of NYC-based Brendan Kwinter-Schwartz, who had just completed their neighbors' house. The aim was to create a family-friendly space with modern details that still maintained the character of the house's exterior. "We were striving for a look of relaxed elegance that was fresh and chic," says Kwinter-Schwartz.

Along with architect Katherine Martin, she brought the interiors up to date by painting, refinishing floors and doors, and re-doing the bathrooms. A host of vintage pieces were introduced anew from Lobel Modern: big names in mid-century design—think Wormley and Charles Hollis Jones—add an eclectic counterpoint to current pieces by Ralph Lauren Home and carpets by Stark. Further adding to the mix are the owners' collection of modern art and antique Chinese pieces they acquired overseas. As the family entertains frequently and grandly—often hosting large parties around their dramatic vintage dining table—their new space perfectly befits their lifestyle.
