A NEW KITCHEN AND BREAKFAST AREA was the focus of this New England Colonial's renovation. But the clients didn't just want a high-end kitchen filled with the latest technology. They wanted an area for cooking and entertaining that would have the intimate feel of a comfortable living room. An inviting seating area was designed around a wood-burning pizza oven with a surround of Calcutta Gold marble. Upper cabinetry is kept to a minimum and pistachio-green limestone countertops and dark stained floors add to the warmth of the room. The appliances are concealed, and the classic styling of arched doorways, a wallpapered tin ceiling and the butler pantry's antique glass backsplash add to the classic look. The large island has a solid walnut countertop, providing both a seating area and a place where everyone can get involved in the cooking preparations. And the homeowners inspire family and friends with typographical quotes, which they change on a regular basis, above the pizza oven mantle.
