PLANTS ORDINARY AND EXTRAORDINARY—NOT TO MENTION A TRIO OF OVERSIZE TAKE-OUT CONTAINERS—ADD OOMPH AND SURPRISE TO A NEW CANAAN LANDSCAPE

“ASTONISH ME!” The owners wanted something no one had ever seen before—intense color, unique plants, unorthodox combinations—and this is exactly what they got when they brought in Janice Parker, of Janice Parker Landscape Design, to expand and renovate their New Canaan landscape. Parker created a Shangri-La of a garden, a place where plants common and uncommon are used throughout in unconventional and unexpected ways.

You might recognize the species, but their characters have changed; there are fastigate—columnar—beeches, weeping hemlocks and exotic plant choices like specimen Stewartias, "Limelight" hydrangea and succulent agave, to name just a few. Beech trees are coaxed into an arch; there's a topiary unicorn, a wetland garden, a crabapple orchard and raised vegetable beds with an encampment of twiggy tipis to support the vines. Sculpted shrubbery vie with trompe l'oeil works by sculptors Grace Knowlton and Paul Morrison. To one side, a reflective sheet of stainless steel creates a dandelion, rounded boulders are placed in the lawn just so and three stacked cartons from a Chinese restaurant are, well, frankly, totally wild. This subtle back-and-forth play—in form, scale, color and subject—is just astonishing enough for the clients.
