(He credits this to what he sees as a market-driven team effort between food producers, providers and consumers.) At the heart of the feast is a crown roast of beef—made from locally raised, grass-fed beef—and Yorkshire pudding. The accompanying variety of squashes, potatoes and other root vegetables, kept at the ready in the cold cellar, were also purchased from local farmers. The dessert selection includes steamed Christmas pudding (with dates, which Crawford loves and says are sadly neglected by Americans today) along with homemade sugar cookies and a dish of "sweetmeats"—dates stuffed with a pecan and then rolled in powdered sugar, a true Victorian treat.

Though Kathleen considers all facets of Christmas—her house, family and Jeffrey's delicious home-cooked meals—her greatest gifts, she'll always accept another. When asked what would be her favorite present, she smiles with a twinkle in her eye and says without missing a beat, "More great Christmas ornaments, of course!"
