Beaver Brook Road, Weston
Perched on lawns that roll down to a private lake, this 10,000-square-foot, stone-and-cedar-shake estate has the grace and grandeur of an English Country home. It was built in 1990 on seven acres for an ancestor of Elisha Graves Otis, founder of the Otis elevator company. Its interiors manage to say "formal" and "family" at the same time, with gorgeous details including hand-painted murals by Suzanne Bellehumeur, Jeffersonian fan transoms, crown moldings cast from 100-year-old molds, double mahogany doors leading into its grand, public rooms and mahogany-and-cherry, tongue-and-groove floorboards. In keeping with its rural setting, the family room has 175-year-old exposed beams that were salvaged from a church, a floor-to-ceiling fireplace crafted from granite from the property and terra-cotta floor tiles. It adjoins a huge, homey kitchen that has pine-coffered ceilings, hand-painted Delft tiles (of which no two are alike) and professional appliances, including a six-burner Garland stove. In all, there are seven bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, including a master suite with an amenity we've never seen: a four-person, wood-paneled sauna. The grounds feature a red-clay tennis court, swimming pool and pool house and, prettiest of all, a gazebo built on a dock that extends into the lake. It's offered by Marylou Jamieson of Coldwell Banker in Westport, (203) 227-1269, ext. 224.
Old Hill, Westport
Old Hill is one of Westport's most desirable neighborhoods—convenient, too, located just a few minutes from the Merritt and train station and within walking distance of Main Street.
