Talk to us about the pièce de résistance. If you could only produce one item from your collection, which would it be, and why? Probably the Work Horse desk because it is so wonderful to work from. I spend a lot of time at it currently.
Describe some of your favorite materials to work with. I love all materials and use wood, metal, lacquer, painted wood, porcelain and mirror. Each contributes to a collection that has a very textured quality.
Can you speak to any current trends in furniture design? Does your own line respond to these trends? The line is getting cleaner but still with detail and interest. This represents the trend in furniture.
What unites all the pieces of your collection—shapes, materials, some signature element? What I hope unites all the pieces is their quality. I like to work in contrasts when putting furniture together so each piece of this collection has its own character.
Describe some of your most cherished pieces of furniture in your own home. The original Twigs mirror hangs in my living room, and my mirrored Serge Roche bed will never leave my house.
If you could choose to take a coffee break with anyone, living or deceased, who would you choose? Thomas Jefferson—smart, artistic, a gardener and sexy—what could be better? And, like me, he's a Virginian!
