Amusing the Eye

A charming gentleman whose lanky height and boyish modesty suggest a young James Stewart, Cicio's career as a creative retailer took him from dressing windows to working as CEO of I. Magnin and president of Donna Karan's retail development division, among other positions. Today, aside from doing interior design work for clients including his friend Joan Rivers, he works with Prince Charles on The Prince's Trust, helping to expand the Duchy Originals brand of organic food and home products to the U.S. This has led to the creation of another prized collection: a selection of personal letters and memos from the Prince.

While many have influenced Cicio's life as a collector, his greatest inspiration was his mentor Cici Kempner, a buyer at Lord & Taylor. Early on, she told him that as part of his burgeoning career he was going to travel extensively, and advised him to buy at least one object on each trip. "'It must be beautiful and it doesn't have to be expensive,'" Cicio recalls her telling him. "'If you do this, when you are old you will have a home that is not only beautiful but that is full of wonderful memories.'" Today, he has both.
